    Volt readings
If checking a fuse on a three phase 208-230V circuit, what is the volt reading through a fuse and what would the reading be if a fuse was blown?

I always check fuses by continuity,, take it out set meter to ohms, and check for continuity by putting a lead on each end if you get a reading,, it is good,

Three phase reading are very tricky. You will have one leg that should read 120 volts, a second leg that should read 120 volts, you will have a third leg that should read 180 volts. Across any two legs you should have a reading or 240 volts, Now if the three phase has blown a fuse at the transformer the reading will not read these readings, and it is not really predictable to what they might read.
Like wmproop said always use a ohm meter, with the fuses out of the electric box.

A loose wire connection of just one wire will cause a fuse to blow or a breaker to throw with three phase. Check for a blown fuse with continuity test(power off). All is true about the voltage that letmetellu said unless you have a wild leg of three phase than the voltage reading will change.

    wmproop:

I guess you have never been burned by the intermittant fuse. I have, twice.
Ommeters test for bad fuses, never good ones. A fuse that tests good only has a "high probability" of being good.

I had fuses that would test good, but when placed in circuit under load they would open. Real fun.

Replacing a 240 volt outlet with a 120 volt oulet [ 1 Answers ]

We've switched to a central air conditioning system and no longer need the 240 volt outlet by the dining room window. The house was built in 1928, updated in 1957, and again a couple of ad hoc times thereafter. The wiring is at times very old, brand new or somewhat old. My guess is that the 240...
