    Ceiling fan Smell
My boyfriend installed a new ceiling fan, it has 3 speeds and runs on a remote. We can "smell" the motor when it is running. It is not hot to the touch. He checked it and it is wired correctly. I am afraid to use it. Any thoughts?

How long have you run it for? Motors will normally be hot, and a smell is not uncommon when running a new fan for the first few hours.

    What brand is the fan?

It is a Harbor Hreeze fan. We ran it for about 4 hours total. I turned it on a few minutes ago and can smell it again. Just worried my house will catch on fire... Thanks.

Doubtful.. . But if you see smoke coming from the fan shut it off. I would keep running it with someone in the room, and see if the smell decreases.

I've NEVER had this happen myself, but every owners manual states to look out for a "break in smell" and I've heard many reports. I suppose it is the varnish on the windings baking.

We recently got a new ceiling fan for our living room and put the old one (not sure of brand - but not more than 3 years old) upstairs in a guest bedroom.
