    Military & Joint custody
My son is recently divorced and has joint legal custody of his 2 year old son. He has equal visitation in addition to the joint custody.

He is considering joining the military. His ex-wife told him that if he did so, that she would sue him for full custody of their child.

He has no issues with giving her decision making authority (with the exception of he and the child moving "far" away) while he is away, but does not want to give up future rights.

    Any advice?

    Thanks!

There is no problem in deferring decision making to his ex, if he is unreachable. But since he may be giving up some of his visitation, it may be harder to regain it.
