    Automatic Transmission Slipps
    Hi,

    I have Ford Falcon EL 1997 model. There is switch Economy Mode and Performance mode. When I put the switch in Eco mode, the transmission slipps. But when I put it into the Performance mode, It works OK. So What could be the problem? Electronic, Mechanical or Solenoide, Computer??

    Are you sure it is slipping? The performance mode characteristics are firm shifts and torque converter lockup quicker then the economy mode which can make the economy feel as if it is slipping when in fact it is not. Economy mode characteristics obviously save fuel but they also account for comfort such as smooth shifts.

    Thanks for your answer.

    After posting message yesterday, while going home it slipps in performance mode as well. I don't know whether its called slipps. The behavious is while changing gear, it just go Bang Bang. So what is problem is technically called what is the solution?

    I am not understanding what you are trying to convey to me.

    The symptom of slipping would be that when you press the gas it moves off slowly with the engine revving or going more RPMs then would be normal for that speed. Gradually the vehicle will "catch up" with the RPMs as the vehicle picks up speed.

    You are saying that the problem occurs when shifting. The bang bang has me confused. Do you mean that it is shifting hard? What I mean by this is simply that when an automatic tranny shifts it is a smooth almost unnoticeable event, but if it is shifting hard it is very noticeable as in it does not engage smoothly instead it engages roughly with a jerk.

    If it is slipping it is probably worn bands and usually can be determined by the sypmtom of slipping as well as the transmission fluid will usually be brownish and have a slight burnt smell to it. A slipping transmission will usually require a rebuild in the near future as it will get worse and worse. If it is shifting roughly it could be that you have a plugged transmission filter or your modulator valve may be going bad. On earlier model Ford tranny's they used to be bolted to the outside of the tranny and had a vacuum line attached to it.

    In either case, what I would do first is this. I would drain the transmission fluid and change the filter. You do this by simply pulling the transmission pan and the filter will be bolted to the bottom of the transmission valve body (you can't miss it). If the filter is plugged, it could raise the pressure in your valve body and cause hard shifting. I would then put in a bottle of Lucas Transmission treatment and then refill the tranny (DO NOT OVERFILL) with fresh transmission fluid.

    I would not usually recommend fixes in a bottle but that Lucas Transmission Treatment does miracles. I have used it on more then a few trannys where it either fixed the problem or lengthened the life of a tranny that was on its way out giving it another 10,000 or so miles before it finally died allowing you enough time to find out the cost of a rebuild/replacement tranny and deciding whether it is worth it to put a new tranny in an older vehicle.
