Hi all.

I have a 93 Accord automatic with 150k miles. It has been overheating now for a while and got progressively worse.

I first noticed it while stuck in traffic when it started getting warm out. I checked my fans and they were not coming on at all. After replacing the fan sensor and testing everything else, they still didn't come on. So I wired BOTH the AC and the Cooling fan to switches so that I could turn it on manually when I come to a stop.

When I am cruising on the freeway it will NEVER overheat. However, once I sit in traffic for a while it will start to. Also, if I put my car in neutral on the freeway for long enough it will also start to overheat until I put it back in gear. This leads me to believe that the problem does NOT have anything to do with air flow over the radiator.

A guy at work started my car and took the radiator cap off, and noticed that some bubbles came out when we revved the motor. He says that it is the head gasket. However, I need to reallllly make sure its not the head gasket before I tear this thing apart. I have heard of people replacing it and then it still overheats.

Could there be air in the system that would cause this? I did have to take out the tempeture sender for the cooling fan which probably let air in, but this was after it was overheating anyway. Before it ever overheated, I had the thermostat replaced and coolant flushed just as preventative maintenance.

Coolant and oil levels remain very stable, and I don't notice any mixture of the two.

I reallllly appreciate any input. I just didn't like my buddy's advice of "just replace the head gasket", because that is a hell of a lot of work and money if it doesn't work.

First check the thermostate this is usually the case
