I am in the process of putting tile on my bathroom floor and the toilet flange will sit about 1 inch below the new floor level. Can this space be made up with a wax ring or will the flange need to be replaced?
No toilet flange

My 90 year old house has only a lead pipe coming about an inch out of the floor where the toilet was sitting, it is 4" diameter and it looks like the wax ring was placed right onto that without a flange.
