    Credit card debt collections
    I live in California. I have a WaMu credit card. I have never missed a payment. I had to help my oldest son out using this credit card. I have other credit cards and have never missed a payment. The balance is over 10000.00 dollars. I have made all payments on time. Now they have raised my minimum payment from $275.00 to $320.00. I have not used the card for 6 months.
    After repeated attempts in writing and phone calls they refuse to help. In my checking account I have social security direct deposit and a small VA pension. I cannot make the payments anymore. If I go in default can credit card collectors freeze my bank account. I am disabled. I own nothing and live with my son. Their frees and interest account for appox. $150.00 each month

    They cannot freeze your account unless they have a court order stating it's okay for them to do so...
    What they CAN do, however, is bug the sh*t out of you trying to get you to pay the bill... they will call up everyone they can dig up that's connected to you (relatives, exes, neighbors, bosses) and bad mouth you to those people in order to try and get you to call them and pay your bill. They will call you nonstop day and night... then after a while they will turn it over to collections departments who will themselves tack on their fees to the account, raising it by a definite portion; but without adding any interest...

    From then the debt will bounce back and forth between the original credit card company and various debt collection agencies... If they can find one nasty enough to sue you, they will... and it will be up to the Judge in that hearing to decide what/how you will have to pay them back...

    When you say you've asked them for help... what 'kind' of help are you asking for?
    I'd ask them to close the account, stop charging interest, and let you pay down the balance with the original minimum payment amount... if they start telling you this is not going to happen, maybe even threaten that the alternative is you stop paying altogether and they can spend more money trying to collect from you!

    Or you can ask them to do the same as above with closing the account and stopping the interest from accruing and then making a lump sum settlement payment if that's an option for you...

    Either way, good luck... credit card companies are a real pain in the @ss to deal with most of the time!

    This is a letter I am sending Monday morning by certified mail.
    WaMu card services correspondence department,
    This is concerning my credit card # ending with-3989. I have sent numerous e-mails and phone conversations for the past three months. All e-mails and phone contacts said there was nothing they could do. These fees you charge me every month have to be eliminated. You have raised my minimum balance this month from $275.00 last month to $320.00 this month. I have not used this card for six months. I had this card for 7 years. I have never been late with a payment, and prior to helping my son out have always paid off the balance. I cannot keep this up. If you cannot work out something with me that I can live with, I will be unable to pay the payments.
    I live off social security which is protected by federal and state laws. I need a response from you by the due date of the payment date of July, 1st. By letter, phone, e-mail, or online. I am a quadriplegia and live with my son I own nothing.
    If we cannot work something out the payments will stop. Because my social security is protected income you will receive nothing. I have letters prepared for my bank to protect exempt income. Letters to the Federal Trade Commission-Consumer Response Center, the California Department of Consumer affairs and the California Department of Justice. Also cease letter to refrain from calling and correspond in writing under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
    It will be to your benefit to work out something with me.

    I'm sure you are aware SS is exempt but your pension is not, nor are co-mingled funds.

    I wouldn't go into all this detail - send a letter and tell them to stop contacting you. You are handling them ammunition with a detailed letter and the details are not necessary.

    So they may or may not proceed to judgment and may or may not lien against bank accounts, property, whatever is legal in your particular State.
