    Welding a woodstove to repair it
    Can a cast iron woodstove lid be welded and expect to hold up under the temperatures normally associated with burning wood in the stove? We got a very nice, very decorative cast iron parlor stove (Art Deco? I don't really know) at a yard sale for $15 but it has a crack. The stove lid (I mean the entire top of the stove, not the little circular eyes) which is separate from the rest of the stove and can be lifted off, apparently was dropped or damaged and shows evidence of having been welded back together. The damage is back near the pin hinge that allows the lid to swing back and forth which is back close to the outlet flue. If your answer is no, I'm thinking I could install one of those flickering electric fireplace units inside this stove (it has a mica panel in the door to show the flames) and still use it.

    A very good welder skilled in cast iron can probably fix it. I have seen it done before.

    Any tips on how to spot a very good welder? Or is it trial and error?

    Got it. Checklist: find possible welders, look for nicotine stains, administer field sobriety tests. Discuss the fee before he sobers up.
