Moen Single Handle Shower Diverter Leak
I have a Moen single handle valve in my bathtub. The tub spout has a diverter on the top to change it to shower mode. Recently I tightened the screws on the cover plate where the handle attaches to eliminate slack which was causing the tub spout to move (and pull caulk away) each time the shower diverter was used. As I tightened the screws, it drew out the handle assembly a bit and forced the tub spout out as well. So, I loosened the tub spout and seated it further back on the pipe to eliminate the unwanted movement. Now there is a steady leak behind the wall, whenever the shower mode is activated. I am afraid I compromised a joint. Any suggestion to remedy this w/out tearing the tile off the wall?

    Thanks!

Put your mind at ease. All you have done is to roll the "O" ring out of position when you moved the spout back. You have a slip on diverter spout,(see image) that has a "O" ring located in the rear that prevents leakage. Remove the spout and position the "O"ring back where it belongs. Sand off any burrs on the end of the copper pipe or you will be rolling the "O" ring right back off again. Lubricate the end of the pipe with a little soap to sllpw the "O" ring to slide on without binding. If your valve and spout had been installed and backed properly we would'nt be having this conversion. Good luck, Tom
