I want to install wall tile in my bathroom. Can I install the tile over the sheetrock or do I need to use some type of wonderbroad?

In my experience, yes, you can install the tile over Sheetrock in a bathroom, but it is preferred that it be a kind that is water-resistant. However, in a tub, shower or other area where there will be a lot of water or moisture of some kind, it would be best to use Wonderboard, Hardibacker or other cement-based backerboard of some kind.

There is a special Sheetrock or drywall material that has a protective, water-resistant coating that can be used for the walls of a bathroom. It is called greenboard.

There seems to have been some controversy in the use of greenboard and the application of tiles on it. Some like it and some don't. I don't really know that much about the controversy.

It also would be a good idea to be looking into what the code for your area might be concerning what you would like to use as a wall material, if you might have put up a new wall.

Clough is correct on all points. You would need to tell us whatwalls are you considering for tiling for us to be more specific. If you have drywall in place and it has served you well you could tile over it but not inside a shower or tub enclosure.

Clough is right on. If it is in a shower / tub you should use cement board, otherwise it is OK to put it on the drywall. Hardibacker is much easier to work with than wonderboard.
