The best air cleaner I found is to use several air filters. I use a washable filter along with a throw away filter. I throw the throw away filter out every week (it catches the small stuff) and wash the washable filter every week (it catches more of the small stuff). I use the throw away as the first filter the air passes through and then the washable one.

I had ionizers in all the rooms of my home for years and found that they worked fine as well but had a funny noise emitting from them. There is nothing out there that is "cheap" either, nor is there anything really quiet that I have found. Having a whole house a/c and change the filters all the time is probably your best bet.

    There is no such thing.

If it is going to clean "everything that is in the air", where do you expect the unit to put all that crap?

In the filter, or filters, of course, so you will have to change or clean them regularly. A unit with no filter would be called a fan, not an air cleaner or purifier.

Your best bet is to find a good HEPPA filter, with a washable filter, as the other answer described. Eventually though, the HEPPA filter will have to be replaced, but they usually last for a year or longer.

The less you spend, the more crap will remain in your air. To get good quality and performance, you will have to pay for it. Holmes makes some good ones that are not that expensive, WalMart sells them as well.

There are many good cleaners, but the better the cleaner the air, the more the unit will cost. And of course they all use filters, the better ones will or may have several filters. Normally a filter for the larger particles that is washable, and a hepa filter that is replaced.
