Hello,

I have a newly installed outside faucet (by my brother-in-law) that was working fine until a few minutes ago when I unscrewed the cap on the top which I discovered to late is the anti-syphon device. I screwed it back on but now when I turn on the water it comes from there instead of out of the hose. What did I do? Can it be easily fixed?

I don't think it is hard to fix... just may be a good nuisance to you!

Look around the ground and make absolutely sure you did not leave a spring on the ground... sometimes these or another part pop out when VB disturbed. Do you have a name brand on the unit.. Arrow head? Mansfiled? What have you..?

Otherwise, may need to go to where the unit was purchased and buy another unit and swap out the vacuum breakers... ;)

Parts are specific to each manufacturer... but check to be sure this is not your manufacturer... depending on manufacturer, may also be able to purchase just a sillcock service kit (includes VB repair kit). That would require you to go where valve was purchased and ask about the VB repair kit.

Bring them a printed version of the repair kit from the website link... that way they can't tell you doesn't exist... ;)

Shut off your main and take your faucet parts to the store where you got the new spigot. Inspect a different spigot to see if you still have all of the correct springs and seals, I think you dropped something or at least did not screw that cap and parts back correctly. Where you just curious?

I swear! I was struggling with a way to tell cma to just swap out parts... and I also wanted to ask them about the curiosity factor... ;) It has to be that... we'll see!

Wow, quick replies, thanks so much.

I did go out after I posted my question and found a small part on the ground.

My brother-in-law installed it a few weeks ago to replace the old one which was shot. He's not a plumber. It worked fine until I messed it up.

I thought it was a place where I could put another hose so I unscrewed it, then put it back on immediately when I realized it wasn't.

In trying to figure out what had happened I put the cap back on, disconnected the hose and turned on the water so this little piece could have come out where the hose was attached. It's small plastic, "teeth" on one end and a black rubber washer on the other. Logic told me it wouldn't go under the cap but I tried it anyway, of course the cap wouldn't screw back on.

It's a new Quartermaster NSF 61-9.

I'd love to get it working before it gets dark this evening if it's fixable.

Its fixable but they aren't all the same so I can't tell you which way to install that part. I'd go back to the store where I got it and take one of theirs apart and make mine match it. Mark and I can't tell you its OK to just swap parts at the store , like some folks might tell you.
