    You should get a recovery CD and boot from that and let it reinstall the OS. Your computer in the state it is in now is going to be of no use to you.

    You can call HP to get the recovery CD/DVD for a nominal charge.

    One other option is to boot into Safe Mode and make sure your hardware is okay- No yellow exclamation marks.

    Is this something new? Does it happen in certain programs, anytime?

    Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup.
