    Rental Deduction
    Hello!

Can a H1B holder claim deduction for rent ? Also can they claim for job miles ? My tax consultant is saying that a H1B holder can claim both rent and job miles deductions. Please let me know. Thanks a lot for your help.

    Chandra:

Normally, you cannot deduct either or mileage to and from the job.

However, if the job requires to work somewhere other than your primary work location, AND the work is for less than one year, AND you do not get any reimbursement from the employer (either direct reimbursement for expenses or per diem payments, then (and only then) can you claim rent and job mileage.
