Mouse curser frozen.
I have another computer running XP and using a wireless Microsoft mouse. The computer is about 6 years old and have had no problems till now. I turned the computer on this morning and it booted up fine, but the mouse curser is frozen and won't move. I swapped the mouse out with the one on this computer and it works fine on this computer, but neither one will work on the other computer. Any suggestions as to what I might need to check out next?

Can you get into safe mode to see if mouse works there.
Have you added any new hardware or software recently
Installed or uninstalled any software before this started happeining
What type of mouse do you have are they both wireless? Do you have a wired mouse you can try

Thanks for your response. Yes, I can get into safe mode, but the mouse still doesn't work. I haven't added any new hardware or software recently, either. And I haven't installed or uninstalled anything before this happened. I am using a Microsoft wireless optical mouse on both computers and they both work fine on this computer, but neither will work on the computer with the frozen mouse. I don't have a wired mouse to try, but I think I can borrow one and see if that will work. Thanks for your input.
I borrowed a wired mouse and it works fine. However, now I can't get online. I think it has something to do with the USB ports, because nothing works that is plugged into any USB port. I am using a cable modem and it is connected to my computer with USB, as is the wireless mouse. Also my USB flash drive will not work now. Seems that everything works fine except what is connected through a USB port. Any suggestions as to what I should check next?

GO into your DEVICE MANAGER and see if you have any yellow alerts by the USB drivers for your system. Your USB may need drivers reinstalled or you may have suffered an entire failure on the USB inside the computer.
Right-click on MY COMPUTER > PROPERTIES >HARDWARE > DEVICE MANAGER
Anything with yellow alerts, right-click and select uninstall/delete.
Reboot, let system reinitialize the drivers.
If the system never sees the USB drivers are missing, and using the Control Panel to initiate the FIND/ADD NEW HARDWARE also doesn't reinstall those drivers, then the USB hardware in your system is no longer active at all... i.e. broken.

I followed your instructions and didn't find any yellow alerts, but I did uninstall the USB and it found new hardware and installed the drivers. But the USB ports still don't work. Guess it is new motherboard time now probably. Thanks for your input.

Last ditch... are you trying to use the USB ports on the FRONT of the computer? Those are usually connected internally via a cable that CAN come loose. Odd, but it can happen.
The USB ports on the back of the computer are usually hardwired and might still work if this is the case.
Grabbing at straws here. You could look inside and just see of the cable connecting the forward ports has wiggled loose.
===========
You could also use the BIOS to disable the builtin USB, then install an addon card of your own to put USB back in. This is probably MUCH less work and cost than a new motherboard.
Bonus, the forward slots might be able to be plugged into this new card, too, so you keep the easy access to the front USB slots.
If you have an empty slot, worth a shot. (rhyme master)

I have 4 USB ports on the back and 2 on the front of the computer. However, none of them work, and they all used to. The cable connecting the front ports is connected well. Anyway, I hadn't thought about installing an addon card, thanks for the idea. I assume I would have to have an empty PCI slot, so I'll check it out tomorrow and see if that will work. Thanks again for your input, you've been very helpful.

Yes, I did a system restore a couple times, but still no working USB ports. I appreciate your input, though.

Try and uninstall wireless software through add remove if possible with the wired mouse
Restart PC and start over like you just bought it and run through that process

Well, I finally got the problem fixed by installing an addon USB card. All 6 of the original USB ports are dead, but I have 4 on this addon card that work so I'm back in business! Thanks for your imput.

Hi all, I want to do some "housework" on the PC . I have done what I can and want to do some more in safe mode. I have made several attempts but the curser won't budge from normal mode up to safe mode. This has only been a problem for the past couple of days. Anyone got any ideas why. Thanks

My mouse went out on an old computer and I have tried installing new software using only keystrokes to no avail. Everything I try comes back to the same problem -- not having a mouse. I can't uninstall the old software w/o a mouse. I'm lost. Suggestions appreciated.
