I am in the process of moving my washing machine below into the basement. I was successful in moving the dryer, but realize the washer is more of a daunting task. There is a vertical sewer pipe leading out of the house. It stands roughly 7 feet high and runs directly into the basement floor. At the top of this pipe it has a 90 degree elbow then immediately there is a wye which runs up to the main level where it provides access for the washer drain in its original position. Beyond this wye (another 3 feet) a sink and a toilet are connected as well (both on the main level). I would like to set up my washer next to this sewer pipe. Can I tie my washing machine drain via a wye into this sewer pipe? Roughly 2 feet from the ground there is a cap that I am guessing is an access point in case of a clog to the sewer. I figured I would cut into the sewer pipe above this cap and setup a wye. Would this work?

Also, I am guessing I need a vent. Can I disconnect my original washer drain from the wye above (at the top of pipe just off the 90 degree elbow) and run this down to my new drain which would then act as a vent? I would remove the catch on the main level and cap the open-ended pipe.

This is a 7 year old house and all piping is PVC.

Hey Rich:

If I understood correctly... yes to all of the above!

You can install next to the main stack

You can cut in a new wye fitting (with 2" drain for washer) just above the cleanout cap you mentioned.

You want 2" ptrap for washing machine, and out of that 2" ptrap you want a 30" standpipe.

As long as nothing else on that waste line from above for the old washer AND YOU CAP the old trap off I think it is a great idea to use the old line as the vent!!
