I'm replacing the sink in the bathroom. The drain pipe extends too far from the wall to match up to the new sink. The original material was PVC. I need to cut it to make it fit, so I'll have to bond a new elbow to connect the trap in the correct location. The replacement pipe parts (elbow, trap, etc) that I have on hand are ABS.

Is it OK to bond the two types of material or should I go out & locate some new PVC parts to complete the project?

Is there a difference in the types of adhesive, or are they interchangeable?

Do I need to prime the parts being bonded?

I don't do this myself.

They do, however, make a TRANSITION CEMENT specifically for your application... see pic.

You would need to read the can to determine the correct primer for this application.

Unfortunately this cement will probably not be readily available in your area.. so probably much easier to just go to home supply and pick up pvc fittings, small cement and small primer!

They also make an all purpose cement that bonds PVC to PVC and ABS to ABS... but not PVC to ABS... ;)

Further the IRC presents that:

P3003.2 Prohibited joints.

Running threads and bands shall not be used in the drainage system. Drainage and vent piping shall not be drilled, tapped, burned or welded. The following types of joints and connections shall be prohibited:
1. Cement or concrete.
2. Mastic or hot-pour bituminous joints.
3. Joints made with fittings not approved for the specific installation.
4. Joints between different diameter pipes made with elastomeric rolling O-rings.
5. Solvent-cement joints between different types of plastic pipe.6. Saddle-type fittings.
