    Service engine light 2002 Altima
I have had an ongoing problem for months with the service engine light. First I need to emphasize that there is not a single driveability issue with the car.
First went to the dealer ( the light had gone out after being on for a weeK)
They told me that they could not find any codes stored or anything wrong.

Problem increased in frequency and I went back with the codes I got from Auto Zone,
U1001 and U1000, plus the info received from Captain Rich, that this was a communication
Problem between the ECM and can com circuit.

Dealer insisted ( and they said they tested it three times) that it was a week battery causing the problem. Though I expressed my doubt I allowed them to replace the battery, another
$200.00. Later that night, about the third time that I had started the car after having the battery replaced the light went on.

Back to the dealer. This time I found that there were two service bulletins issued by Nissan for this very problem( confirming Capt, Riches diagnosis) and it affected all Nissans and many Infinity models from 2002-2006.

This time the dealer said that the ECM was not communicating wit the IPDM and the IPDM
Needed to be replaced at a cost of $800.00. I looked at the computer print out( they would not give it to me) and I saw that after the ECM did not communicate with the IPDM that they did test it any further. They did not look at the connections, etc. and they wanted me to pay for the IPDM in advance before they would even order one so I said no thank you.

At this point , I have no confidence in my dealer and will, not go back. The money is not the issue.. I don't want to spend hundred of dollars again and see that light go on. There are still times that it does not go on. Other time it takes as long as 5 seconds to go on after I start the car. Seems to me that I should have other issues if I had a bad part
That is so expensive. Of course , my immediate problem is that I am due for inspection
Next month and have to have this fixed. Any suggestions? And what does an IPDM do anyway?

About a month ago the service engine light soon light came on. It stayed on for days , then went off for a few days. This has continued for 6 weeks now, I checked the gas cap and that was fine. Was at the dealer for yet another recall(#9) and they checked it. At that time the light had gone off and...

Altima Service Engine Soon Light [ 13 Answers ]

The Fuel Cut Off Control Valve recently went on my 1998 Nissan Altima. It made the gas pump shut off even at the slowest filling speed (a huge pain) and it also caused the "Service Engine Soon" light to come on. Replacing the valve was easy, cheap ($40) and it solved the fuel refill problem, but...
