The condenser coil in my Trane XL 1800 unit was found to be leaking freon. In fact, after being charged, it only lasted one day before the unit was not cooling again. The leak was found on the coil. I was told that the coil itself was covered under my warranty. BUT that I would have to pay for shipping, approx 20 lbs of R-22, freon disposal, labor for installation, and charges involved to "fill out the warranty paperwork." This all came to $1800. When pressed, I was told the breakdown was as follows: Shipping - $400, 20 lbs of R-22 @ $14/lb = $280, freon disposal - $420, and labor/paperwork - $700. Something doesn't seem quite right! What do you all think? I am in Texas, by the way.

I think you are being ripped off big time.

First if the leak was that big it should have been found before they charged the unit on the first trip.

Shipping should be about 50.00 from anywhere in the lower 48 states and they are making a few bucks still.

A jug of refrigerant is about 140.00 trade cost and there is 30 pounds in that jug. You figure out there cost and see what it costs them.

Freon disposal??
You do not get rid of freon/refrigerant you reclaim what's left and reuse so the disposal charge is BS.

Your unit does not hold 20 pounds of refrigerant. If lucky it has 5 to 7 pounds at the most. I would like to know where they are using the 20 pounds at and since they will be recovering any that is left that makes it worse.

Labor and paperwork. Paperwork takes 15 minutes. So what is the hourly charge for labor. I think you are getting a Missouri boat ride on this one.

They will have nothing in this but some refrigerant at 6 pounds X 5.00 per pound for a total of 30.00.
plus 25.00 braze alloy and gas to burn it on (attach the refrigerant lines)

They did not mention a liquid line drier in your bill so that is something that should be replaced. (makes you wonder if they know what they are doing).

For 50.00 shipping you would think it is being shipped to there shop so they do not have to pick it up.

So what do we have before labor

30.00 + 25.00 + 50.00 = 105.00 before labor/gas for the truck and a few other goodies.

OK so you give them 100.00 for goodies that is still only 205.00 before labor.

What is the labor rate?? Allowing 6 hours which is a lot of time for this job I guess they must be charging 275.00 per hour.

Something is very,very wrong with this picture.

All companies have to make a profit and a fair price for this job is 600.00 to 800.00 plus the 205.00 other costs. Total of 805.00 to 1005.00. That is it and they are still doing very well at those prices.

Call at least 2 other companies for bids to replace that coil.
