I am not aware of attorneys giving phone consultations. They always prefer in person consultations as they can be shown pertinent papers, etc.

I don't have any papers. I have heard of this before that different states off it. I just don't know where to look.

How much does a consultation usually cost? I have went to an attorney once before but they didn't offer "consultations" per say and it was quite pricey.

You need to call each attorney's office and ASK them what the consultation fee is BEFORE you go there. Usually it is around $100 for an hour's consultation in a divorce case. Some attorneys don't give consulations(?) Am not aware of that. Usually attorneys like to give consultations. This lets you shop around for an attorney instead of hiring the first one you meet with.

I can't address other States but I have two options for you that work in NYS and probably other States are similar:

The County Bar (Attorney) Association has a list of Attorneys who work at reduced rates OR pro bono (free). They also have a list of Attorneys who charge a very minimal amount for a first consultation and somewhat basic advice - I believe at the moment it's about $20. That entitles the "client" to about 30 minutes of undivided attention and, as I said, basic advice and definitely some direction.

I myself do pro bono work if asked by an Attorney - I won't put forth disbursement money but I will do the field work - it's sort of paying back. Lots of related professions do.

The next thought is to call Attorneys - get referrals from friends, co-workers, not every Attorney and every client are a good match so you have to sort of interview Attorneys - and explain it's a Family Court problem, you need some advice and direction and what is the charge for the first meeting? Some Attorneys will meet with you for free. Others have a minimum charge. Some have their Paralegal (or law clerk) do "intake," interview you, make recommendations - they cannot give you legal advice but they know their stuff (at least the ones I work with know their stuff) and then they introduce you to the Attorney. Saves the cost of a long initial meeting with an Attorney.

Some Attorneys will look to the other party for payment - depends on the case.
