s.s. and va 100% disability income
My wife is rated 100% total and permanent disabled by social security and the Veterans administration. This is her only source of income. I at this time have no income, as I stay home to take care of her. Is she,or the both of us as a married couple required to file federal taxes each. I believe this is unearned non-taxable income, however some one at the IRS customer service 1-8oo number has tried to tell me that she still has to file, even if she doesn't owe. Also should we file this year in order to qualify for the economic stimulus package. Or would we not qualify for this due to not having any earned income? Any knowledgeable answer to these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have no legal obligation to file, because such disability income, by itself, is NOT taxable.

However, you should file to qualify for the stimulus rebate. This can be done with relative ease using forms from the IRS website (www.irs.gov).
