    Old dept 10 years ago?
A lawyers office called my cell phone 4/30/08 @ 7pm and said that I had an old dept to pay, I callled them back on 4/01/08 @ 12 noon and asked what this was in regards to, they proceed to tell me that I owed HSBC bank 5,000.00 back in 1998 is there a statue of limitations on this? This is the first I heard of it and they wanted me to pay 1/2 of that by 5:00 clock today which is 4/01/08 Is this legal?

New York is 4 years on a contract for sale.

You can check the following link for all the different areas the limits apply to and try to determine you specific one but I think the 4 years would be correct.

Are you sure this was an attorney, my guess is it was probably an over aggressive collector.

Call them back, ask for the name of the person you are talking to, ask them the name of the law firm they represent, tell them that you are going to record the conversation and see what they tell you.

Tell them you request validation of the debt before you agree to anything.

IF they are legitimate, they will answer all of your questions and you can do some research as to the validity of their answers.

At least then you will have some more information to work with.
