Toilets smell of ammonia when we haven't used bleach - what is it ?
WE bought a house that needed loads of work. The upstairs toilet had a bad bleach smell that would not go away and we could not pinpoint where the smell came from. We had 3x plumbers round, none of them new what it was. We have had every pipe , toilet, sink + tile replaced in the upstairs toilet + the downstairs toilet - which is directly below the upstairs toilet (we have even replaced the floorboards in the upstairs toilet). This was all done over a month ago + now the downstairs toilet is smelling as well... we are at our wits end!! Can somebody please please help!!

There are only two things that I know of that smell like ammonia, one is ammonia and the other is urine. Where's the smell the worst? At the base of the bowl? When you flush? The water in the bowl or tank? Back of the bowl? Give me something to work on here. Regards, tom

Hi Speedball - thanks for that, but it is not a "foul" smelling amonia smell - it smells almost "clean" + bleach like, but is overpowering - we cannot find the source of the smell i.e. we have smelt everywhere + cannot find the origin - hence we completely changed everything - the smell is worse when nobody uses it rather than when it is used more .

I have 3 cats. All nuetered. One of them has urine that has the most potent ammonia smell I've ever been exposed to. I know he's not missing the box. The smell is the worst if one of his clumps break apart during scooping so I know it's not because of the box or the litter. He's perfectly healthy,...
