Hi all.
I have a 8 yr old female Great Dane. She is losing weight. She is eating well but can't seem to gain weight. She use to be fatter but losing weight weekly. I need some ideas for foods to give her. She eats dry kibble, tinned foods and all our scraps from our meals.

Dry kibble. If a dog is losing weight, likely it has a physical problem. It could be from the lack of a complete and balanced diet due to what all you are feeding. Most healthy dogs will eat all they need of a dry kibble which are carefully formulated to provide the complete and balanced diet dogs need. Tempting the dog with rich food may only cover up a problem that needs corrected such as worms. I would have a vet check her, and if he doesn't find anything, cut back to only the dry kibble.

I'm sure you have done all you can in this situation as far as vet care. If all is said and done and you are up against the wall , "slop" is a last resort. Its not the healthiest way to feed a dane and sure isn't the right way because then they will become spoiled. However, cooking your dane dry food along with house food and water for the gravy is always a "winner". You can mix dry, a dog can food, house food including meat, water and heat up and that's what I call slop. It wins every time. Like I said, its not the right or healthy way to feed a dane, but it will definetely raise they're appetite.

I had this same problem with my 3 year old great dane. He would eat the house out if you'd let him and still thin as a rail. With a clear vet check every time and to my wits end, finally someone recommended RETRIEVE it's a powder formula that's directly for digestive and weight gain (Also, RETRIEVE comes in a multi vitamin) after just several weeks of feeding him normal and giving him both we started noticing a difference. It's going on a month and now you can't tell that he was ever thin. I love the stuff!

Our breeder has us putting a small amount of organic corn oil in our pup's food everyday. I asked our vet about it, and he said it was perfectly okay. I think it's supposed to be good for their coat, etc. (and I will say that touching our dog is like petting a silken mink - SOFT and SHINY), but it also adds extra calories and fat. We haven't had any problems with loose stools (which can sometimes come from added fat), but we do have to watch his weight a bit. You might want to ask your vet if this is something that would be okay for your dog.

I sorry to say this but a great danes life length is only about 5-10 years so she may be dying srry...

Although I feel that last post could have been worded a lot better, your dog is on the older side of their breed, and it could be connected to her age.
