See the sticky at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/i...tml#post251802 It starts with a crate. Leaving him in a crate in a dark corner and covering it might keep out the sun. I don't have any good ideas on the birds.

A dog that has not been crated since it was little, may take some work.
Start just putting its toys and treats in the crate. Praise it for going
in. Feed it in the crate. This is also an easy way to maintain order at
Feeding time for more than one dog.

If you get up and give him a Kong filled with peanut butter, you may be able to go back to sleep. Not the best choice, but might help.

Tell him to sleep with you and not in the kitchen, maybe he is lonely...

I have a lab husky mix that still wakes me up if I go past 6:00 am. If I don't get up on time she is standing over me in the bed looking at me. Babies and puppies neither of them can tell time, but they know when it gets light outside.

    Hello :)

I have a jack russell cross chihuaha puppy. I experienced the same thing... what a nightmare! She would wake up several times a night for the first 2 weeks after I got her.

Then she wouldn't sleep past 4:30-5am every single day (I was shattered! )

I tried keeping her alone in the living room/kitchen at night, sleeping in my bed with me, putting blankets and sheets up over the windows to keep it dark, leaving food in her bowl overnight in case she was aking up hungry, closing the windows in case cars were waking her up, keeping a quiet fan on all night in case she was too hot, putting a ticking clock in her bed to mimic her mothers heartbeat sound, keeping the TV on quietly all night in case it was too quiet for her to be alone. Lol yes It was exactly like having a human baby there!

In the end, I think it just took time for a new puppy to get used to its new home and the routine of its owners. Simple as that. It took 6 weeks for her to realise we don't get up before 6am. I keep it dark in her room, and leave a night light on so its not pitch black, and leave food out overnight. She barks around 6am wanting to get up, so I just open the door of her room and my bedroom, and go back to bed. She's happy enough to either lay with me, or go do her own thing knowing she can be close to me if she chooses. She still wants me to get up though, she growls a little bit and paces about waiting lol, but I make her wait, because I'm the boss damn it! Lol! In a few more weeks, I'm hoping she will be more OK with letting me stay in bed longer, but I don't know if that's what happens or not...

We have a 9 month old yellow puppy and she's great! Our question is how can we get her to sleep in a little later?

    A few background facts:
    1) Crate-trained. She loves her crate. We have been letting her 'free' at night lately with the door to our bedroom closed which she'll headbutt to try & get in and to tell us to wake up around 5 am. If crated, she'll bark around the same time.
    2) She's been right next to the front window of our condo (which is in a loud city/ urban environment). This has been good I think cause she's used to a lot of 'white noise'. Thunder is minor, for example, to some of the buses that drive by!
    3) There is a large skylight that still lets in a ton of light even though the shades are drawn.
    4) We DON'T want her to sleep in bed with us.
    5) She's exercised TONS, and isn't waking up early cause she's under-stimulated.
    6) She does 'catch-up' on her missed sleep during the day even though she's walked thoroughly.

I'm thinking maybe two things. Either:
    A) Crate her, and place a dark blanket over the crate to control the skylight light
    B) Place her in another room? This may not go over well as her crate has been in the same place since we brought her home. She loves the crate location and can watch whats going on from the front room.

    Thanks again!

If it is true that he is lonely buy a small ticking clock and put it by his slepping area, the ticking tends to calm them. Give it time he's still just a puppy. Remember be consistent if you give in to his crying than he will get into the habbit of waking up early.

Puppies aren't used to having having bedtimes and wake-up calls. As babies in a litter they could do as they pleased, sleep when they want for as long as they want. It takes some getting used to. With all of our puppies we slowly worked them towards a target wake-up time. If your pup wakes up at 5am (or 5:30am) every morning, try fetching them 15 or 30 minutes later every morning or every few mornings (judge based on the pup's reaction). It will take some nerves of steel and some pacience because, God knows, a pup's cries can be shrill that early in the am. It will work though.

Crate training and covering the crate are both excellent solutions. Certain breeds actually thrive on having a crate (notably labs and other large breeds) because they are den animals. Also, make sure you take the pup out right before they go to bed (the latest possible) so that the reason they rise at 5:30 isn't because they have to go potty.
