This morning when my husband and I woke up to go to work, both of our cats were fine. This was around 7:45 a.m. He and I returned from work around 3:45 this afternoon and one of our cats was acting kind of funny. He did not come to the door when we arived. This kind of worried us. With in about 45 minutes give or take he started to cough and after doing that off and on for maybe half an hour he coughed up a clear goey liquid. Finnaly about 6 o'clock we were getting really worried and took him to the veterinarian and he thinks he has an infection because he had a temperature of 104 degrees F. I was just wondering what kind of infection could have caused this and what are the chances of my other cat getting the same thing? Also, my husband has been sick with a high fever and coughing up clear stuff so what are the chances of it being the same thing?

Well I remember learning that cats can't spread illnesses to humans and vice versa... I'm not completely sure though... hmmm... try changing all the water and food for your other cat and make sure it doesn't consume or touch anything that the your sick cat touched... just to be safe. Best of luck! I lost one of my cats the day before I started school and she was 19 years old, and she had a few of the same symptoms... but unfortunately her organs were failing... No blood work? He just guessed since the cat had 1 degree above normal temp? Hmm
I hate to just see cats get antibiotics and sent home with out knowing what's wrong. Simple stress can elevate the temp from the car ride over to the vets office. White blood cell elevation shows infection, temp alone doesn't always lead to an accurate diagnosis of infection. Cats drool for 2 reasons, pain and nausia. Panting is usually noted as well with higher degrees of pain.

Totally docwill, I don't understand them not doing a cbc at least to figure out the wbc. Like he said a high temperature could be just from nerves or it's stressed. There needs to be more tests done before determining if it will return or not. It could have just been a one time thing that happened in the house while you two were gone and it will never return or it could develop into a serious illness. Your cat's could have gotten into a fight while you were gone and resulted in the high fever and even the vomiting from stresss. Check it over really really good for punctures and feel for lumps. Is it FIV/FeLV negative? Constipated? Any more vomiting? If it vomited anymore on the antibiotics discontinue use and seek a second opinion.

As for your husbands symptoms there are very few zoonotic diseases. So the chances of them being the same are very rare.

Well, Zigmund is doing great. The antibiotics worked. He refused to eat anything or use the little box at the vet's, but as soon as we got him home he did both. I am pretty sure it is because he HATES that science diet stuff and the news paper litter... heh Picky little guy. He only has one more day of his medicine as well. So yea, over all he is doing pretty good.
