    Strange behavior
Why would our 8mo old female dachshund puppy suddenly urinate on my husband in the middle of the night? She has been housebroke for at least 4 mo. Loves both of us. Is not a problem and well behaved otherwise. This has happened only one other time when she was very young. Thank you, sharon

    Simple excitement.
Plus keep in mind most all breeds of dogs do not have a mature bladder or shpincter muscle until age 6 months. This can take longer if some unforsceen genitic trait passed on.

If she hasn't been spayed, she could be coming into season. Flaky behavior is one of the early signs of it. You can expect almost anything. She may be telling you, he is hers. It may be past the point where your vet will want to spay her now. Most pets are much better off if they are spay/neutered by 6 months.

    Submissive urination?

I agree Doc. In addition, it might also be caused by a dominance issue. Does she know both of you are the leaders of the pack? If not, dogs will pee and poop on our beds as a way of asserting themselves and their positions in the household. So, let us know about that aspect of her training. Could also be that she is "marking" her territory with you. She is starting to become a big girl and may be vieing for possession of your husband with you.

P.S. Didn't see the other two answers when I posted. Yes, could be spaying her will do the trick. Could also be submissive behavior.

Maybe you should give us a little more background on the dynamics of your household.

If she continues urinating in inappropriate places and times, the first thing I would do is check for some type of urinary tract infection (UTI). Has she been spayed recently or come into heat? Look for some type of physical reason. Maybe she just drank too much water that night and wanted your husband to take her out. You want to make sure that there is no physical cause for the behavior before you try to work on mental aspect.

If there's no real physical cause, then start looking at behavioral stuff. What's changed? Is something stressing out the dog? Has your husband been away on a trip? Yell at the dog? Yell at you? That sort of thing. Changes in the environment can also stress out the dog.

At eight months, the dog is just starting to come into the 'teenage years'. You get weird behavioral stuff popping out sometimes in that time. Maybe it's a dominance thing, start working on obedience stuff. You would have to look at what else is going on with the dog.

Honestly, if it's just a one off thing, I wouldn't necessarily worry about it. If it continues, get a physical checkup and try crating her at night beside your bed for a while and see what happens.
