California verbal roommate agreement- evicted! Owe?
[F]I live in California & have a rent question....I had a verbal agreement with my roommate (which I know is the same as a written one in this state). I was unable to pay rent & was evicted by the Apartment Manager. :( After I was evicted my ex-roommate paid the back-rent so that he could stay in the apartment (without telling me first  of what he planned on doing & that he wanted to be paid back). Now he says that I have to repay him the back-rent or he will take me to Small Claims Court!
**I was told that I don't have to repay him since 1-I was evicted & 2-He did not discuss the repayment before he paid the Manager.**
 I just need to know if that (**) is correct? Or if I do indeed need to repay him. Help!!

Sorry if this was "back rent" for the period you lived there, of course he can and should expect you to pay for the time you lived there are was not paying.

And no he does not have to discuss this with you, since you had a obligation to pay the rent, and just because they evicted you, you still owe the money you owed when you got evicted, that debt does not go away,

Yes you pay him back, you tell him you are sorry for breaking your word to him to pay your share and leaving him in trouble and almost getting him evicted also.

    TO: Fr_Chuck~
I was told by the apartment manager that since I was being evicted, I did not have to pay anything, since the eviction was the "punishment." He (the manager) said that the other roommate would be a separate deal & that if he wanted to stay that he was to work something out with the manager. The manager just said to just worry about leaving & he would deal with the roommate. Does that change anything? Sorry~I should have posted that part before. Didn't think about it. Thanks!
