Washing machine discharge volume
Good morning.
I have a septic tank under the slab of my house. Occasionally, the tank becomes full (I pulled the downstairs toilet once, and the water level in the 3" pipe was at floor level). This happens only when there are many people in the house and laundry is being done. After a day or two, the level goes down, and all is well.
I am putting in a new septic tank and drain field in a few months. In the mean time, summer is coming, and this being a beach house, I expect lots of people and laundry to happen. There will be peaks during the weekends.
I feel the main culpret is the washing machine. I'd like to reroute the washing machine discharge away from the septic system, and divert it outside. There is an old concrete block pit in back of the house (I believe it was the original septic tank). I already have a pipe runnng outside from the washer drip pan, and could adapt this to carry out washer discharge.
My question is, how much water does the average top loading washer discharge during a full cycle? If the pit is big enough, the washer could discharge into the pit, and leave the septic tank to handle the remainder of the house's waste water. I am also going to caution the tenant to do only one load of laundry per day as suggested on this forum, but can't guarantee that advise will be heeded.
Thanks,
Glenn
