Breaking a lease to purchase a home
I live in SC and I currently live in a apartment, my lease is not up until Feb of 2008. I recently got married and we did not expect that we would find a house to purchase as soon as we did. We close on June 6th. I gave a notice on May 1st, so it is over a 30 day notice. The new management at the apartment has told me that I will have to pay the rent until they find a new tenant. I discussed with the previous management that I did not plan to stay for a whole year, they said this would be fine as long as I gave the proper notice. I have been told that there are exceptions when your are purchasing. I have looked on the SC website for laws on real estate, I am clueless when it comes to this.

    My question is:
    1) Is there any truth that there is special exceptions to break a lease when purchasing a home in SC?
    2) Is there anything I can do about the new managments rules on my lease, since I did not get anything in writing?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hello nurse:

If they told you that you could negate the lease by giving notice, they should have written that in the lease. Apparently, they didn't and you're going to be held to the written word.

No, there is no truth to the rumor that you can break a lease for ANY reason.
