    Hypothyroidism tests
Does anyone know if your thyroid levels are checked during a regular physical?

I had labs done and the doctor was interested in checking one thing that was going on with me and I forgot to ask him.

The reason I ask is because it seems I have to work at just keeping my weight steady. If I don't exercise for a couple of days I gain 3 to 5 pounds.

No, they are not checked. You need to ask for them to be checked. You want to have your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) checked. If it is abnormal, they will then check a T4 exc. Make sure that you ask!

Em, as you know I am far away from home right now, and my notes are at home. I will check with Dad's doctor on this and get back to you. I do know that some doctors do this routinely and others don't.

Okay, what I have found out is that some doctors do do a thyroid panel during a routine physical and others don't. The particular doctor I spoke with today does indeed do a thyroid test that includes the TSH, T3 and T4. However, you should check with your doctor to see if he/she did any of these tests.

No,they don't.You need to ask for a thyroid panel, which checks the levels of function on all levels. Many times these tests aren't always reliable.I have mine checked every three months, especially if you start taking the pills.
