One of the upstairs shower/baths is leaking. When my daughter showers, the water starts dripping from my bathroom doorframewhich is directly below her bath. About a year ago we had a plumber come out who "sealed" around the outsides of the knobs. The leak stopped... but has started again. I was told by an aqaintance who is a plumber that I need to take off the knobs and replace something... can you comment or offer any help?

Your valve stems have a seal, usually an O ring that can be replaced. Do you know how to remove the knob and stem?

Spindle assembly is what the previous person is talking about.
You can replace the o rings on them if you know what your doing.
Although old assemblys don't have orings but use a hemp gromit.
In any case if you don't now what you are doing you may get yourself into more trouble.
You need to know that there are a number of other possiible places it could be leaking in from also.
May be around the wall flange of the tap is just one.

I know how to remove the knobs... did that when we bought the house... not sure what to do after that... is a call to a plumber warrented since I really don't know too much and my hubby is not handy...

Sounds like you have taken the domes or the handles off before.
The spindle assembly is what the domes are attached to.
It may pay to call a plumber as you may be well out of your depth.

Cheryl, this can be a learning experience and isn't that hard. If you have trouble then call the plumber. Shut off your main water valve and open the faucets. You should see a hex collar around the stem/spindle that looks like a nut. Just put a wrench on that and unscrew counterclockwise. It should pull out woith a little tug. Take it to the hardware store and tell they guy you need new seals. If there's no nut you might see a few screws instead. Back them out. Come back here if you have any questions. In the interim, besides the handles, it can also leak from drain, shower door or pan. You have to investigate a bit to pin-point the source of the leak.
