Hello my cavalier king charles had 5 pups 5 months ago I got rid of 4 and I have 1 left I'm just wondering when she comes back into heat can he get her pregnant at that age.or should I start separating them now in case she comes into heat.thanks in advance for the advice

Yes it would be possible. Such a mating could produce low quality puppies, and the AKC will not accept them for registration because the father was too young. Any genetic tendencies towards problems you failed to screen out when you bought the mother and selected the stud would be more likely to come out. You should have searched both pedigrees making sure there were no problems with allergies, sensitive stomachs, behavior problems, and any other problems. I am sure many of the problems I see here and other sites come from failure to only breed the very best.

Both males and females are capable of reproduction their first year, but never should be bred. There is little excuse for not spay/neutering them before 6 months.

I would have to dissagree with the previous answer or only aggree in part. Domestic Dogs (the kind we keep as pets) do not reach sexual maturity until they are between 6 month to 1 year), In the puppy stages, there may be simulated mounting, however they have yet to sexually mature and the hormones that direct, and stimulate the desire to breed are not yet present. Is it possible.. yes, is it unlikely yes..

The title of the question says 4 months, but the question says 5 months old and the mother hasn't come into heat yet. By the time she does, the male's testicles could be fully descended and producing sperm. Although matings with such a young male often produce few or no puppies, even one is too many. To suggest otherwise displays a lack of both knowledge and responsibility. Any unsupervised mating can cause injuries or infections. Even neutered males will sometimes mate with a female in season. There won't be any puppies, but the female could be damaged.

It is even a bigger problem with young females. They are all too capable of getting pregnant in their first heat cycle. On another site I am active on, almost daily I see questions from somebody having problems because they neither spay/neutered their pet or educated themselves on the responsibilities of keeping an intact dog. Such ignorance leads to no end of misery. There are also many questions from would be backyard breeders trying to substitute a few questions on the internet for the serious research it is irresponsible to fail to do before breeding dogs.

I think we are arguing semantics, I agree that after six months there is a risk of them mating and adding to the over abundent supply of animals that will eventually be abandoned or euthinized.. I agree that mating in that young of an age would contribute to the likely hood of puppies with a higher probability for genetic defect.. As to the critical timetable of 4 months I still believe that it is unlikely for mating to occur.. If the dog is 5 months old or 5 months and a week or what ever the case may be then it would be advisable to keep them supervised and or separated to prevent uneeded copulation and or breeding. As to the neutered males and breeding again that would be dependent upon what age the dog was neutered.. Those that are neutered at the 4 month mark are much less likely to exhibit that behaviour.. Those that have been shelter dogs, and were not neutered until later in their life.. would have a higher probability of trying to mate

Hi me again thanks all for applying to my question.I didn't agree with labman what he's saying.im not a back yard breeder both my cavalier king charles come from respected breeders and both have champion bloodline in them and their actually house dogs not backyard dogs.and as for not doing my research on breeding I did I was just inquiring about the pup and when he's sexually active I thought 6-8 months myself.and neutering the pup is not going to happen as I said she had 5 pups and 1 remain I'm hoping he,l go to his new home shortly.both parents are 3 years old if I didn't do any research or use spray she would have had more than 1 litter by now so thANKS ANYWAY FOR REPLYING and I do now how to look after my dogs.:mad:
