Walking 30 minutes a day should not hurt you. If you are concerned about your health contact your doc before you start.
Walking for any length of time will help you, unless you are medically unfit, walking 1 mile a day is the goal, along with cardio (at leat 20 min.) and resistance and weight training, everyone should do an over all body work out, involving, cadio, jogging, walking, gardening, biking, dancing, resistance training, swimming, ab roller, crunches, but we all need to exercise our entire bodies 30-60 minutes a day 4-5 times a week, no excuses.
