Sewer line runs across and up a hill
When we flush our toilet, sometimes it is sluggish. Other times it will flush fine. We are thinking, maybe it is because we live on a hill. Our line crosses over the hill. I don't know which direction the public street sewer lines drains out. All il know is our home is built on land that begins to go up hill just where our sewer line cap is located, in front of our house to the right. How can I find out which way the public street sewer line drains out? When they build homes don't they consider this degree of drainage before they install the line? Our home was built in 1989. I suppose I can ask the former owners if they ever had this problem also. So far we just live with it, and sometimes have to flush twice. Also my mother in law says I shouldn't flush the kitty litter down there. It is Worlds Best Cat litter. It is made of corn husks and is biogradable, it melts. Please any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks very much

Lets start by complimenting your mother-in-law with her good advice. Don't put anything down your toilet other than human waste. Your house/hill may run uphill but your sewer line is sloped down hill by digging a deeper trench. Waste does not flow up hill without an ejector pump. You don't have one do you? Kitty litter and cat waste is heavier than human waste and sinks to the bottom of your drain lines faster than human waste. It will cause blockage over time so stop that. Normally I'd have you try a few home owner rodding but it may be too late for that now. It sounds like you have a clean out in your yard so you could try renting a 3-4 " electric rodding machine and run enough line to reach the street riser. This isn't much fun so I won't blame you if you are dialing a plumber right now. Good luck.
