Your cat drank a small amount of antifreeze yesterday. What do I do?


My golden is 85 pounds an he eats anything, about an hour ago he knocked over over his biscuit jar witch is clear glass, an we saw him swallow some. What do I do?

FYI, you might want to consider doing a write up of symptoms and problems that are common occurrences, and give medical advice as to what someone should do immediately to keep their animal from getting deathly ill and/or dying. Then speak with labman about creating a "sticky" at the top of the pet forums, as he has done. This would be quite beneficial to the web site and provide some much needed life saving advice/tips that we could use here. :)

I will leave the guessing up to others. The thought of both of those things happening kind of turns my stomach. I know even a small amount of antifreeze can kill an animal and have always been told to call a vet immediately. Same goes for glass shards. I have never had either of those things happen on my watch so I don't have any answers. Talk to me about a dog swallowing thistles, and I know that if I spread vaseline on a piece of white bread, it helps remove the thistles stuck in the throat. Is either vaseline, white bread, or both, involved in the answer? If not, I haven't a clue. Maybe someone else will want to take a guess at your questions.

Actually very close in referance to the bread and glass.

I know that when your dog has swallowed something sharp, large and/or a solid that won't break down in the stomach or pass through the digestive tract, you should feed him/her white bread to create a "cushion" around the object so it doesn't puncture anything, until you can get the dog into the vet.

Antifreeze damages the kidneys, once they are damaged;there's not much you will be able to do for your pet.

Yes, pompano, very true. It is too bad DocWill didn't post here what the vets actually do. He told me that when a pet swallow antifreeze, vets will immediately put your pet on an intravenous consisting of Vodka. There is more detail on this in the cat forum, where he posted a duplicate of this.

For the glass shards, you are supposed to feed your pet cotton balls to create a cushioned barrier so that it completely isolates the sharp edges until you get your pet into the vet asap. The white bread, has a tendency to break down in the body too quickly, which the cotton balls don't.
