    Dial up and Broadband
    I work with it so I have tried to work this out but cant.

    Friend asked me to come over to fix his computer its not connect to Internet.

    Hes moved back into his parents house ( parent have got dial up ( BT beep pay as you go )) In his previous house he had AOL broadband. Hes spoke to AOL and they have activated the line for broadband use.

    Hes got BT voyager Modem supplied by AOL.

    Went around there installed CD supplied no joy!
    Downloaded drivers for Modem from AOL

    Still no joy.

    It run thorugh everything then tries to search for the connection and doesn't find it. There is 3 lights on the modem Power/DSL/Data and at no point does either Data or DSL do any thing.

    Have checked that the connection is working by plugging phone into it.

    IS IT BECAUSE THEY STILL HAVE DIAL UP RUNNING DOES THIS MAKE A CONFLICT



    Any help will be grateful

    I successfully used dial up and broadband without a problem a few months ago, so it shouldn't be that causing a problem.

    I am not technical so I would suggest calling AOL customer support and ask their technical people for help, they are usually pretty good (and are based in this country I think!)

    The existing dialup shouldn't make a difference. Make sure you have the proper filter on the DSL line.

    If he just moved the service, it will probably be a few days before he can actually connect. From the time he requests the change, AOL has to get a release from the phone company to setup DSL on that line, then they have to switch the DSL on in their service. It can take anywhere from a few days to a week.

    Fred, I won't go into just how bad AOL are here, but I'm sure you'll soon find out.

    Now the lack of DSL and data lights means that the modem isn't getting an ADSL signal.

    What type of modem is this.
    I assume it's the normal bog standard USB type as that seems to be what AOL gives out for free, rather than a router/ethernet type.

    Now you need to remember that ALL active phone points need to have an ADSL filter in place, one side for voice and the other for the AOL modem.
    It's best to run from the Master socket.

    If everything is correctly connected and still no joy it's time to call AOL's helldesk.
    Once you get passed the out sourced people the UK based guys aren't too bad.

    Also rather than calling their expensive 0870 number here's the freephone version for AOL Broadband: 0800 2796771

    Have fun and make sure it gets through to the level 3 techs as they actually know what they are doing.

    What I have noticed is that its not even putting anything in network connections either whys this??

    Mate has 4 months left on AOL then moving to talktalk that who he's got the phone line connection with

    Modem is bog voyager 150

    OK so as AOL haven't connected this line yet, cut your losses and cancel them now.
    Sign up with T T soon as.
    This will save on migration latter on.

    Also junk the voyager as they suck bottom big time.
    You'd be better off with a netgear (or similar) ADSL router.
    PCworld have a few.
    Here's an example of what to look for: NETGEAR DG834GUK WIRELESS 54MBPS MODEM ROUTER - Buy cheap NETGEAR ADSL wireless routers at PC World

    Least that way you can have upgradability on the network, improved security, wireless, no cruddy sign on governed by the computer as the connection is always on.

    Think that about covers it.
