Please help me with Benjamins peepee habbits... I leave the door open, yet he will peepee everywhere IN the house. I was told not to shout or hit the dog, but I am losing it with him. Benjamin was giving to me... I think the people just did not want him,and did not love him, how do I let him know I love him, but I don't like it when he "wee's" everywhere. Please help, as I really would love to keep Benjamin... Thanks!

You have to go back to the basics with Benjamin.

First, have your vet give him a thorough check up and make sure there isn't a physical problem. If that is ruled out, and it is just a matter of improper training from his previous home, you need to start training him to go outside by walking him on a leash. When he pees outside, praise him very loudly. Make a big deal of it. If he is food motivated, carry small treats with you and give him one each time he does it outside and again, heavy, happy, excited praise. When he pees inside, if you catch him in the middle of a pee, tell him "no", then place the leash on and bring him outside and walk with him until he pees again. Again, treat & praise. If he pees inside and you don't catch him in the act, ignore him and clean up the mess. He will eventually make the connection that he needs to do his business outside. It may take him a little longer than usual because he didn't have the proper training in the first place. Patience, patience, patience. Praise the good behavior, ignore the bad.

The door you leave open (doggy door?), doesn't allow him to make the connection of the behavior you expect from him, until he learns that he must do his business outside. That method should be used very far down the road when you are comfortable that he has made the connection. Until then, you need to physically walk him on a leash to do his business.

Try these suggestions first. If, in a couple of weeks, you aren't making any headway, come back and post, explain exactly what is going on and we will try to help you further.

Are meant for younger dogs. The last paragraph discusses adapting them to older dogs. He should be small enough that you can gently pick him up when you catch him in the act and carry him out.
