Computer unable to detect cd-rom drive
I'm donating my old computer with Windows '98 to charity.
In order to clear the hard drive of all data,I purchased software called "Data Eliminator", which is on a cd.
I have been unable to get this software to engage.
After I load the cd drive with the disk, the light comes on in the drive, then goes out and nothing happens.
As I kept trying to get it to work,by re-starting my computer again and again,I noticed at the very beginning of the start-up the following phrases:

1)"Unable to detect ATAPI IDE CD-Rom drive"

2)"TAPI IDE CD-Rom device driver not loaded."

    That's it!
    What can I do?
    Thanks

Have you set your cd-rom drive in the BIOS "Boot Order" to "1st"... that way your cd will start up when you reboot your PC with the new software you purchased. Hope this might help... : )

Could be that a) the CD is not bootable or b) the device is damaged.

Change the cable wire that is attached to CD-rom and try again.

Make sure that your IDE cable is functioning correctly by testing it on another PC.
Make sure that the jumper settings are correctly setup.
