They went through a series of locals to set up a new home, (e.i. grassy field, raft on a river, rocky sea shoals, etc.) After the days adventure the tired group of kids go home to mom. The thing that sticks out the most in my memory, is how the older early teens took care of the younger kids and the toddler. They made sure they had food and didn't straggle too far off. It was beautifully illustrated and the pictures made me want to run away to these places. One of the children was always wearing a pot on his head. It was always one of my favorite childrens stories and now that I have kids I really want to share it with them.
