Yes, you have to have an exam "down there" before you go on birth control... it's not that bad at all.. and if you want to have sex you should def. get on birth control soon... and for the first week of your new birth control still use condoms... make sure you and your boyfriend regularly get tested.. you guys can go together---its not that scary-its for your health! :) don't worry!

I'm 20 and I have been on birth control since I was 18---the only side effects I have had.. are better skin :)... in the beginning I had slight nausea and headaches.. but after it regulates (within the first 6 months) you'll be fine... just take it everyday around the same time.. good luck :)

Why are you worried about a pap smear? It doesn't hurt, and it takes little time. You won't be able to go on birth control with out seeing a gynocologist I'm afraid. You need to get used to it. All women are uncomfortable at first, but soon after a few visits it will become less strange. You need to do it to ensure your health. Might I say though that you are awfully young to be considering sex. Please remember that any sex whether protected or not can end up in pregnancy... it happened with me. Just be sure that you are both prepared to have a child if you are considering sex...

Hun, if you are planning on having sex it is VERY important that you begin yearly female exams. They do include pap smears, and it is important to get one when going on the pill. It is a little embarrassing the first time you have a pap smear, but you can make an appointment with a woman doctor. She goes through this yearly also, so she would be very aware of your concerns. Also, remember that this is an exam that GYNs do day in and day out, it is nothing new to them.

Now, remember, neither the pill nor the condom are 100% effective in preventing pregnancy and/or STDs.

The doctor will use a long cotton swab and just rub the inside of your vagina... you will feel a little scrape... but not painful, just a little itchy. Then its done. That's it. She will do other things in the exam, but nothing is painful, its just strange that's all.. dont worry.

I am so glad you asked your questions. It is much better to ask than to go in unknowing.

    Let's see...

When should you start exams? Typically around age 16 or you become sexually active, whichever comes first.

You will lie on your back with your feet in stirrups. At this point the doctor takes an instrument called a speculum (kinda looks like salad tongs) and she will insert it into your vagina to do the swab of the cervix. It only takes less than 2 minutes.

Then the doctor will insert her fingers into your vagina and press on your abdomen to check for the location and size of your ovaries and make sure there are no lumps and that everything is healthy. It is uncomfortable when the doctor uses her fingers, but it only lasts for a few seconds.

The breast exam does not hurt at all. Make sure you make an appointment before you are due your period or right after.

There is no reason to be terrified of the exam. What you should be terrified about is what could happen to you should you not get an exam.

Some women get cervical or other cancers, without the exam you would not know you have it and could not be cured as many of these diseases do not have symptoms until it is too late.

One thing, you can make an appointment with a female doctor, she has the same parts you do, so she knows how to do it.

Any more questions? I would love to help you.

I close my eyes and take deep breathes and just think of the ocean or something... it helps to just take yourself rfom the room... but stay attentive to any questions your doctor asks. You know the pap smear is just one part of the exam right? You keep referring to the pap smear, but I think you really mean the exam itself. Most people will refer to it as an annual, because you go once a year.

Everyone woman has to have an exam. When you get birthcontrol. When you get pregnant. & all this other stuff <3 Its natural and honestly its not that bad. Your first time is scary but its not as bad as what everyone makes it out to be. You'll spot a little bit after you do it but that's about it. Your doctor will go over the different types of birthcontrol that's available and may be good for you
