    Heat Pump Issues
I have an older Janitrol heat pump. When you turn the tstat on, the attic fan turns on and blows warm air, but the outside unit will not come on. All you hear is a loud buzzing sound at the outside unit. On some advice, I replaced the fan motor and capacitor, but the outside unit will still not come on. I'm tired of 87 degree nights in the house. Any advice?

Sounds like you are going to have to call a serviceman, you did check the breakers and voltages to the condenser before you replaced the fan didn't you?

What do you know about electricity? If you know about it and have the equipment to test the components of your system then it is possible that you can find the problem and repair it yourself. But from what I have read so far you have already spent quite a bit of money and are no closer to a solution that you were. Next you can replace the compressor, if that does not work I would check the fuses. Or you night check the fuses first and save a few steps.

I know there is juice going to the unit by mistake. We didn't turn it off correctly and got a face full of sparks when messing around with it. We learned to pull the outside disconnect after that episode. I'm not an electrical guru. But it was running just fine for 2 years.

Just a note - we had a previous issue where the outside unit wouldn't shut off. The transformer in the attic was replaced to resolve the issue. Prior to that we had replaced the thermostat. The unit worked fine for about a year.

We've double-checkedthe wiring on all the terminals. We haven't checked the fuses in the main panel, but those in the disconnect look fine.

Are you getting 240 volts to the unit? Is the contactor pulling in?
