I have a friend who talks to me distinctly then sort of gradually fades to a whisper. He says he feels depressed and is going through rough times. With his past career where he needed to engage people I don't believe this to be his normal behavior.

How could one suggest in a positive way? Is this behavior evasive or detached? Does it warrant professional help?

The convrsation progresses to a monotone mumble the last one or two sentences. Is this to get attention?
