    Replace Garbage Disposal
My garbage disposal has sprung a few leaks from its side over the past two years all in different places. Each time I would seal it with heavy duty glue, which usually does the trick. Now the disposal has another leak, I think it is about time to replace the garbage disposal unit.

How difficult is it to replace a garbage disposal unit, for someone with limited plumbing experience? What are the typical types of tools I would need?

Replacing a disposal is easier than it looks. First kill the power and open up the electric connection, then the drain. Do not reuse the ring attachment in the sink. If you new unit doesn't include a ring buy one and install per instructions. You will need some fresh plumbers putty and a large slip ring plyer or channel locks. The disposal engages the ring and locks with a quarter turn. The wrench that comes with the disposal is for unplugging a jammed disposal but is also used to give you olevergae to engage the ring. So you have been plugging the leaks with glue? Are you sure the problem is the disposal and not just your drain lines? I'd replace the P trap if it is chrome/brass.

I have a different take on replacing a disposal unit. You can save a lot of time and hassle by replacing the old unit with one just like it. Keep the drain assembly and ring intact and you can just snap the new unit in place. This cuts off a lot of time spent under the sink. Good luck, Tom
