    Next of Kin Responsibility, California
My brother in law, 27 with no insurance and an illegal immigrant, was shot and killed by police last week but he did not die on scene. He was air lifted to our local hospital and died there. We buried him three days ago and now the hospital is contacting us for payment on his bills. Do we have to pay them?

Unless you agreed to pay them no, it's up to his estate, and if he didn't have any money in the bank then they're not getting paid.

You have no money and he left no money. Even if you had money, you are not responsible for his medical and funeral costs.

Okay, thanks for the answers. One more question: Is there a law that says we are not liable to have to pay it? I cannot find anything online anywhere... thanks.

Yes there is a law concerning that - call your Legal Assistance Program, or any attorney can tell you what the law states. Usually the first call to an attorney is a freebie. Legal Assistance may tell you for nothing also - they are a program for low income/no income.

You will not find laws saying you don't have to do something, the laws nromally state what you have to do.

But in basics, if you did not sign to be repsonbile at the hospital ( but believe me they will have tried to get you to sign for it)

In some states a persons wife will be responsible, but not sons, not parents, and most certainly not brothers and sisters,
A persons bill will go to the persons estate.

So merely send them the bill back, tell them he is dead, and not to contact you again, If there is an estate, property that can be sold, this property would be sold to pay for his bills, funeral, doctor and so on.

But never agree to pay, don't agree to anything but that you don't owe it.
If they want a mail address give the deceased persons address.
** but be sure you did not sign for the bills at the hospital. I did that for my dad by mistake once, won't ever do that again,
