Regedit.exe should be in your C:\Windows folder. Look for it and check its properties. It should have the usual Microsoft data and be 143, 432 bytes in size.

It could be a virus or trojan or some other malware, that replaced the original regedit.exe.

You should also run the usual - antivirus, spybot, adaware, ccleaner.

    Hi HVAC888,

problem generate from a worm to modifiy rules into regedit.

I want to update for this solution:

For access to regedit, follow the solution, type into run windows "cmd" and press ok (if you have windows xp 98 type "command")

For find the Run window follow this instructions: START > RUN or button combo from your keyboard WINDOWS + R

    now type

    c:\windows\copy regedit.exe regedit.com

When you read the message, 1 file has correctly been copied, you can type

    c:\windows\start regedit.com

and the famous regedit can be open whit the window editor!

now inside the regedit navigate to and select the key:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

In the right pane, double-click the (Default) value.

Delete the current value data, and then type:

    "%1" %*

    Tip: Type the characters: quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.

    now navigate into the key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\regedit.exe
