How do I find out the status on a tax amendment that I mailed for a refund from my 2005 tax year? And can tax amendment refunds be direct deposited (I did supply banking account info) or are they only refunded by check?

The refund from an amedned return is send by check; direct deposit is NOT an option.

You can call the IRS to inquire as to the status of the amendment, but I would not call until at least two months after filing the amendment.
