    Is this correct?
My partner just got back from his third trip to the doctors.
He has been feeling unwell for almost 2 months now and isn't getting batter.
The short story is, the doctor said (after a blood test) that he has a high white blood cell count. He got the results back 2 weeks ago, the doctor told him it was nothing to worry about, but he has gotten worse with his various symptoms.. I will go into them if needed, but my question for now is this.. is what the doctor said correct? Is it nothing to worry about?

Typically a high WBC is little cause for concern depending on the number. A high WBC (white blood cell count) indicates infection.

Now our WBC should range between 5,000-10,000 anything above that signifies infection.

I would like you to go into more detail if you would. Otherwise, please feel free to PM me if this is too personal to be on the boards.

Basically, over the last two months my man has felt unwell, first I noticed his neck seemed swollen on one side at the back, kind of puffy? basically if you touch it it feels like there is something under his skin, he has been having ringing in his ear, and the light started hurting his eyes, that's the first time I forced him to go to the docs.
The doc said nothing was wrong...
Then he started to feel a little dizzy at times but not often.
He got the results back and doc said it was very high but nothing to worry about.
My man is now on his second dose of antibiotics, this time its higher dose.
As we stand, for example last night he got 3 hours sleep, the rest of the night was spent walking around as it hurts him when he is lying down, when he is standing or active the pain eases a little. His symptoms now are the same as afore mentioned but now he is getting pain all over one side of his face, jaw, ear, head, neck, and his speech is becoming slurred at times.and he is always very pale now, lost all his colour. He has been told to go back to the docs next week but it is starting to affect his work and I am worried about him. I hope I have explained enough :-), thank you for answering.

You have explained very well, I am wondering though what diagnosis the doctor gave him. This would really help me. Was it like strep throat? Something along those lines?

    Is he running a fever?

Amoxycillin is a pretty good antibiotic, but there are others out there that are better.

Does he have any allergies to meds? Is he taking anything, and I mean anything besides amox? Aspirin, Tylenol? ANYTHING?

The doctor said it could be wax in his ear! He was rushing like we were wasting his time really, he seems to think nothing is wrong, so the second time we went we asked to see a different doctor. The 2nd doctor checked his throat and said it looks fine, and basically was at a loss as to what was wrong. Today we didn't see the doctor, just spoke to him on the phone as my partner couldn't take any more time off work with this, on the phone the doctor gave him a repeat perscription and told him to come back next week to see if there is any change.
Apart from the antibiotics he is also taking painkillers, paracetamol, on the advice of the second doctor.he is taking nothing else at all and has no allergies.

Wax buildup will NOT cause a high WBC, so there is infection somewhere else.

He has tinnitus (ringing of the ears), does tha paracetamol have aspirin in it? We don't have that drug here, so I am unfamiliar with it.

The neck bit sounds like swollen lymph nodes, it is not uncommon and is rather good actually.

I read again that the light is hurting his eyes, it is possible that he may have a sinus infection.

I was looking on the internet earlier to see if I could find anything out before next week, and tinnitus did come up a lot, and also sinus came up too so you may be right :-) paracetamol does have asprin in it, would that be making it worse taking it with the antibiotics?

Actually the aspirin in the med might be causing the tinnitus. It is a very common side-effect of aspirin.

If he can live without it, he should and see if the ringing stops, as well as any dizziness he may be having.

I wanted to update and also say thank you.
He took me out for dinner for my birthday, we got halfway through the meal when the pain started again, we ended up in hospital last night from 2am until 8am, he couldn't take it anymore.
The doctor at the hospital checked him over and told him it was a sinus infection, you were right...
He gave him some anti inflamitary drugs to help with the swelling and told him to finish the second course of antibiotics, he also told him to stop taking painkillers.
Thank you so much for your help, we both really appreciate it.

I am glad to hear that you finally got to the bottom of this and that you finally saw a doctor who completely addressed your problems.

I am sorry that it had to happen on your birthday though. Must have been quite the letdown.

Now, just remember that he MUST take the ENTIRE course of the antibiotics. It is extremely important that he does not stop taking it just because he is feeling better. If he does this then he risks the infection coming back and being resistant to antibiotics, therefore it will be harder to treat.

One thing I forgot to mention.. last night we were supposed to ask the doc for sleeping tablets, he is on dicloflex 50mg and the antibiotic is co-amoxiclav 250/125mg, would he be OK taking sleeping tablets with these meds?
    Thank you..
  • May 12, 2007, 02:44 PM

It is possible that it is okay to take a sleeping tablet as the Dicloflex is a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) and the co-amoxiclav is an antibiotic.

However, it is always wise to ask your physician about this. I do not know what sleeping tablet you are talking about, so it would be unwise for me to say either yes or no.

Just for the record, Paracetemol is completely separate from Aspirin. It's a completely different analgesic.

That being said, a number of painkiller meds in the UK contain both paracetemol and aspirin.

Thanks Cappy, we don't have paracetemol here in the US, so I was relying on the OP to let me know if it did in fact contain aspirin.

Thanks also for the Wiki link, but in medicine we try to stay away from Wiki as it, at least it did last semester, does not always contain accurate medical info.

Our professors will not let us use Wiki due to certain inaccuracies in the past.

Oh yes of course you'll have your own places to get info, but wiki is as accurate as other encyclopedias, so I'm happy to use it.
