Does there have to be an access panel "cover" -- the actual panel -- for the bathtub, or can that area -- pipes and all, the underneath of the bathtub, etc. -- all be left open? Is there typically a building code about that? Thank you.

Some local codes stipulate that a access panel be installed behind the tub foe service reasons. It only makes good sense. However The Standard Plumbing Code does not address this. By "open do you mean dry walled over? Perhaps one of the other experts working under a another code has a different opinion. Regards, tom

Thank you. By "open", I mean there is no cover over the area. The pipes, drain, underside of bathtub, etc. are all exposed. I'm wondering if any building codes require there actually be a cover. Thank you again.

As a rule we cover our pipes but I know of no code that forces you to do so. Regards, Tom

It depends. If it is a bathtub, then no. If it is a hydromassage tub (with a motor), then yes - there has to be an access panel and it has to be located such that someone can service the motor, or replace it. Regards, Nick
