I am looking to add a stall shower to an existing half bath. Over a slab... I have never done this before and considering doing it myself... I can sweat pipe and can do basic carpentry... I know I need to jackhammer the floor remove and tap into the toilet line... are there any special concerns that I need to be aware of.. . some questions I had were
1. do I need to add a vent ( shower will be within five feet of toilet) and next to the toilet there is a vent going up through the roof
2. I am assuming I will add a "Y" of some sort to the toilet... and how is this connection done... thanks in advance for your help

Code forbids you to discharge a major fixture, (such as a toilet) past a unvented minor one, (such as your shower) You MUST do one of two things.
If you tie into the toilet main you must run a individual vent for the shower, or, you can tie the vent into the lavatory drain and the shower will wet vent through the lavatory vent.

Since you haven't told me what material your pipes are I can't give you specific instructions on how to tie it in as different pipes will use different methods and I haven't a set of plans to lay out the job so I can't be specific as to what fittings to use, however you will cut in a Wye or combination wye and eighth bend to the lavatory drain line to pick up the shower.
